There are distinct differences between Wee Rock's approach to early childhood education and what is offered by other childcare organizations and preschools. Wee Rock uses traditional teacher-directed preschool learning activities blended with child-initiated learning and play opportunities. Many childcare companies and federal programs have philosophies that offer only child-initiated activities, which are great for developing social skills, but offer no direction for the education that young children need to be academically successful.

A recent study on the effects of childcare by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development found that quality educational childcare and family involvement are key elements in a child's development. Children in higher-quality childcare arrangements during their first four and a half years of life scored higher on tests of cognitive skills and language ability than did children in lower quality care, according to researchers conducting the 10 year study of 1,364 children.
